World Mental Health Day
October 10, 2024
For years, I've been championing initiatives that raise awareness of mental health in the workplace. World Mental Health Day offers a vital moment for leaders to reflect on how they can further support their teams. After all, we recognize that being your true authentic self at work can sometimes feel like a double-edged sword.
Morra Aarons-Mele outlines five strategies for improving mental health at work.
1. Start with the work: Focus on how, why, and where work is done. Generic advice about work-life balance isn't enough. Instead, tailor mental health strategies to the specific roles and stressors within the organization. Flexible work arrangements are key, as studies show that increased flexibility reduces anxiety and distress.
2. Engage internal champions: Don’t just rely on external experts or HR departments. Involve respected leaders within the organization who can model healthy practices and help drive change.
3. Foster conversations across generations and genders: Mental health affects everyone, but stigma can vary. Encourage open conversations and ensure that men, who might feel more stigmatized, are part of these discussions.
4. Invest in what matters: Recognize that technology, while helpful, can also be a source of stress. Prioritize meaningful human connections in the workplace to help employees feel seen and heard.
5. Walk the talk: Leaders should actively advocate for mental health by sharing their own experiences and fostering an environment where employees can discuss their mental health openly and honestly.
